History of Portland Jetport

In the late 1920s, Dr. Clifford "Kip" Strange, established the airfield so he could fly his JN-4 "Jenny" Biplane. It was on August 1, 1931, that Boston-Maine Airways began regular service at what was then called Stroudwater Airport, connecting Portland and Boston.

Portland Municipal Airport (PWM) got its name and airport code in 1937 when the city of Portland paid $68,471 for the airfield and renamed it Portland-Westbrook Municipal Airport. The final directing light before the airport was in the nearby town of Westbrook, hence the name.

Captain Harry M. Jones of the Maine Emergency Relief Administration (MERA), a state section of the Federal New Deal public works projects inaugurated in November 1933, surveyed airports across the state in January 1934. From April 1934 through July 1935, MERA spent $816,376 on labor for airport buildings around the state.

MERA built the Portland Municipal Airport's two gravel runways, one running north to south and the other running east to west. The MERA aviation program made Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport in Bar Harbor during the summer of 1935, allowing the Boston-Portland-Augusta-Waterville-Bangor mail route to the resort town.

Using WPA workers, the city of Portland graded the area and constructed the runways in 1938, according to the city's official report. Portland's original terminal was built by the WPA in 1940. The airport for commercial flights is housed in this brick building.

In the '50s, construction on the current airport began. On the map from March 1951, the lengths of runways 1 (4260 feet), 10 (2900 feet), and 15 (4010 feet) are clearly marked. In 1957, construction began on Runway 11/29; by 1966, it had been extended to its current length of 6,800 feet (2,073 meters). With the advent of jet travel in 1968, a new terminal was built.
